Libertarian socialists have long criticized capitalism for pitting people against one another in competition, thereby underming people's solidarity with one another. Libertarian socialists have also clearly championed an alternative economic system which not only treats people fairly, but also allows our capaciy for solidarity with one another to flourish.

But unless the institutions of the new economic system are designed in ways to encourage and reward, rather than continue to punish those who behave out of solidarity, it is unrealistic to believe the world libertarian socialists envision would come into being.

I will describe specific features of a "participatory economy" designed to reward rather than punish people for behaving in solidaristic ways, and thereby provide a realistic transition from "dog-eat-dog" capitalism to the kind of economy anarchists have long dreamed of and insisted is humanly possible.
